Does your motorcycle's ITV inspection await, and do you fear failing? With the new manual coming into effect in 2026, inspectors are not letting anything slide. We'll show you the exact points they check and give you a 30-minute protocol to inspect lights, tires, brakes, and exhaust in your own garage. Play it safe!

Receiving the ITV letter gives more than one of us the cold sweats. And no wonder: with the entry into force of version 7.9 of the Inspection Procedure Manual in January 2026, inspections have become much more thorough. Statistics don't lie, and motorcycles are the vehicles with the highest rate of serious defects.

But hey, the ITV isn't a lottery. Almost 70% of rejections are concentrated in three things: lighting, tires, and emissions. So you don't get rejected for a "silly mistake," at Motocorner we bring you the definitive 30-minute checklist you should do before going to the station. Let's get to work.

Minute 0-5: Your motorcycle's "ID" and paperwork

Before even starting the engine, the inspector will verify your machine's identity.

  • Chassis number (VIN): Find it (it's usually on the steering head) and clean it well. If it's rusty or illegible, it's a very serious defect.
  • License plate: It must be firmly attached, 100% legible, and, very importantly if you've changed the license plate holder, its inclination cannot exceed 30 degrees from the vertical.
  • Insurance and Papers: Bring your Registration Certificate and ITV Card. Although nowadays they check if you have insurance online through the FIVA system, it's never a bad idea to have the receipt on your phone in case the connection fails.

Minute 5-15: Lights, camera, and action

Almost 26% of motorcycles fail due to lighting. Ask a friend to lend you a hand to check this quickly:

  • The double brake test: This is a classic failure. The rear brake light must turn on whether you squeeze the right lever or press the pedal. If one of the two sensors fails, you're going home.
  • The forgotten reflector: That red reflector under the license plate is mandatory. Be careful, it cannot be triangular and must have the European approval mark "E".
  • Have you changed to LED lights? In 2026, putting an LED bulb in a traditional halogen headlight is still considered a significant modification and requires legal homologation. If you don't have the papers, install the original bulb to go to the ITV. For more information, consult the DGT 2026 regulations for motorcycles.

Minute 15-25: Shoes, suspension, and the "ninja trick"

What keeps you glued to the asphalt must be impeccable.

  • Tires: The tread must be more than 1.6 mm, but what they really scrutinize is that the load and speed index matches or exceeds what's on your technical sheet.
  • Leaky forks: Run a finger along the front suspension stanchions. If there are oil residues, it means the seals are broken and it's a direct reason for rejection.
  • The kickstand sensor: Start the bike, put it in first gear, release the clutch slightly with the kickstand down. The bike must turn off instantly. If it doesn't, it's a serious defect. Remember that proper maintenance extends the lifespan of your motorcycle parts.

Minute 25-30: Noises and the secret of emissions

The terror of modified exhausts. If you've changed the "tail" of the bike, make sure the exhaust has the "E" homologation marking and, please, install the dB-killer.

The golden trick for emissions (CO): Emissions tests are relentless, especially if your bike is fuel-injected (SACE system). A catalytic converter only works well when it's very hot (over 300°C). Never go to the ITV with a cold motorcycle. Take a brisk ride for 15 minutes before entering the inspection line to clean out carbon deposits and ensure the exhaust filters everything correctly. Something wrong with your checklist?

If you've noticed that the tires are worn out, you're missing a reflector, or that brake lever has too much play, fix it before you go:

  • Need parts? Go to our Marketplace to find homologated spare parts (from mirrors to exhausts) at the best price. You can also explore our motorcycle search engine if you need a change of mount.
  • Prefer a professional to get it perfect? Find the nearest workshop with the best ratings in the Shops and Workshops directory to get a pre-ITV check. For any questions, consult the motorcycle forum.
