The Honda CB500X (2013) is one of the most logical, versatile, and best-selling trail motorcycles on the market for the A2 license. The secret to its success lies in its unbreakable 471cc, 47 HP parallel-twin engine, designed from the ground up to offer minimal internal friction and very high efficiency. Its maintenance schedule reflects this reliability, prescribing main inspections at very long intervals of 12,000 kilometers (8,000 miles), limiting costly valve clearance checks to cycles of 24,000 kilometers.

Maintenance Interval Table

Honda structures the service plan for the 500 parallel-twin platform in regular cycles of 12,000 kilometers or 1 year (whichever comes first). For more details on the maintenance of other Honda motorcycles, you can consult the Honda CB650R 2023 Maintenance Plan.

MileageTimeMain Tasks to Perform
1,000 km1 MonthBreak-in: Engine oil and oil filter change. Drive chain tension check (35-45 mm slack).
12,000 km1 YearAnnual Service: Engine oil change. Engine idle speed check (1,200 ± 100 rpm), fuel circuit, cooling system, and brake pad wear inspection.
24,000 km2 YearsMajor Service: Mandatory valve clearance check. Spark plug replacement. Oil change and oil filter replacement. Brake fluid replacement.
36,000 km3 YearsMinor Service: Basic tasks from the 12,000 km service are repeated. Mandatory radiator coolant replacement (stipulated every 3 years).
48,000 km4 YearsComprehensive Major Service: New valve adjustment/inspection, spark plug replacement, engine oil and oil filter change, and brake fluid change.

Note: Although the official manual indicates an oil filter change every 24,000 km, many mechanics and owners recommend playing it safe and replacing it with every oil change (every 12,000 km) due to its low cost. It's always good to keep a record in our My Garage to keep track of services.

Critical Maintenance Points

  • Engine Oil and Capacity: Honda's 500 engine requires SAE 10W-30 oil that meets API SG (or higher) and JASO MA specifications. The exact crankcase capacity for an oil change is 2.5 Liters, but if you also replace the oil filter cartridge (highly recommended), the capacity increases to 2.7 Liters (2.9 US qt). The drain plug should be tightened to 30 N·m (22 lbf·ft).
  • Specific Spark Plugs: This engine uses NGK CPR8EA-9 spark plugs. The electrode gap must be strictly calibrated between 0.8 and 0.9 mm. You can find more general information in our Motorcycle Lifespan and Maintenance Guide.
  • Chain Maintenance: Honda places great emphasis on the final drive. The chain must be cleaned, lubricated, and its tension checked every 1,000 km. The correct chain slack for this model should be between 35 and 45 mm. We recommend visiting motorcycle shops and workshops if you need professional help.
  • Tire Pressure: To ensure maximum stability and grip, the recommended cold tire pressure is 2.5 BAR (36 psi) for the front wheel and 2.9 BAR (42 psi) for the rear wheel.
  • Fluid Renewal: Regardless of the kilometers you ride, the brake fluid (DOT 4) absorbs moisture and must be strictly changed every 2 years. The coolant (Pro Honda HP Coolant 50% pre-mix recommended) should be renewed every 3 years.

Disclaimer: As we are not an official dealership, this guide is purely informative and based on the workshop and user manuals for Honda's 500 parallel-twin platform. If you have any doubts, complex issues, or wish to maintain your warranty, always consult an official dealership or an authorized workshop.
