Kawasaki Z800 (2013-2016) Maintenance: Official Guide
Service every 6,000 km, oil capacity and valve adjustment at 24,000 km. Official Kawasaki Z800 (2013-2016) plan.
The Kawasaki Z800, sold between 2013 and 2016, is one of the most iconic and robust naked motorcycles from the Akashi brand. A direct predecessor to the Z900, it is powered by an energetic 806cc inline-four engine that stands out for its reliability. Its official maintenance plan is somewhat more demanding in frequency than that of current models, establishing periodic inspections every 6,000 km, with a critical valve clearance check scheduled at 24,000 km.
Maintenance Interval Table
Kawasaki's regular service plan for the Z800 structures inspections in cycles of 6,000 kilometers or 6 months, whichever comes first. To stay up-to-date with this type of information for other brands, we invite you to visit our motor news section.
| Mileage | Time | Main Tasks to Perform |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 km | 1 Month | Break-in: Engine oil and oil filter change. Idle speed inspection, chassis tightening, and drive chain tension. |
| 6,000 km | 6 Months | Basic Service: Oil level check (official change is at 12k, but many workshops recommend changing it here). Brake, chain, clutch inspection, and light function check. |
| 12,000 km | 1 Year | Annual Service: Engine oil change and oil filter replacement. Fuel injection system inspection, vacuum synchronization (throttle bodies), and spark plugs. Brake fluid and suspension check. |
| 18,000 km | 1.5 Years | Basic service tasks from 6,000 km are repeated. Air filter replacement. |
| 24,000 km | 2 Years | Major Service: Valve clearance check and adjustment. Spark plug replacement. New oil and filter change. Mandatory brake fluid replacement (recommended every 2 years). |
What Happens After 24,000 km?
After exceeding 24,000 km (and its corresponding valve check), the official manual states that the maintenance cycle restarts, omitting the initial 1,000 km break-in:
- 30,000 km: Basic Service is due (identical to the 6,000 km service).
- 36,000 km: A new Annual Service is due (identical to the 12,000 km service) with an oil and oil filter change.
Critical Maintenance Points
- Valve Check (The 24,000 km Milestone): This is the most critical point in the life of a Z800. Adjusting valve clearance requires disassembling part of the engine and must be performed strictly when cold. It is a costly but vital repair; when buying a used Z800 with over 24,000 km, always demand the invoice proving this service was performed. - Air Filter and Spark Plugs: Kawasaki indicates that the air filter element should be replaced at 18,000 km and spark plugs at 24,000 km. Keeping these components fresh will ensure the characteristic strong response of this inline-four. For other models, like the Suzuki V-Strom, we also have comprehensive maintenance guides.
- Engine Oil: Although the brand specifies changes at 12,000 km, due to the model's age and to protect internal components, many specialists advise bringing the change forward to 6,000 km or performing it annually. Use 10W-40 oil that meets API SG, SH, SJ, SL, or SM standards with JASO MA, MA1, or MA2 certification. You can find all these components in specialized stores and workshops.
- Chain Maintenance: The Z800 has a lot of torque, which stretches the chain. Check, clean, and lubricate the drivetrain every 1,000 km or after riding in the rain. If you need to estimate maintenance costs, you might be interested in our motorcycle maintenance calculator.
