The Kawasaki Z900 (2019) in its "Full" 125 HP (92.2 kW) version is the flagship of the Sugomi philosophy and one of the best-selling supernakeds in Europe. Its 948 cc inline four-cylinder engine is a work of art of elasticity, but it demands methodical care. Kawasaki's maintenance program abandons short intervals and sets major services every 12,000 kilometers or one year. The most critical point for users is the correct interpretation of the valve clearance inspection interval, which is recommended to be brought forward from global standards to ensure maximum engine longevity. You can compare its service program with the maintenance of a Yamaha MT-09 SP to understand the differences between models.

Maintenance Interval Table

The Z900's regular service plan structures inspections in 12,000-kilometer cycles after the demanding initial break-in period.

MileageTimeMain Tasks to Perform
1,000 km1 MonthBreak-in Service: Engine oil and filter change. Chain slack inspection (20-30 mm) and tightening of chassis and engine mount bolts.
12,000 km1 YearAnnual Service: Oil and filter change. Spark plug inspection, brake pad check, evaporative emission control system, and engine vacuum synchronization (throttle bodies).
24,000 km2 YearsMajor Service: Spark plug replacement. Preventive valve clearance inspection. Brake fluid replacement (DOT 4) and coolant renewal. Air filter replacement.
36,000 km3 YearsAnnual Service: Strictly repeat the tasks of the regular 12,000 km service.
48,000 km4 YearsComprehensive Major Service: Identical to the 24,000 km service, adding an exhaustive inspection of steering bearings, suspension, and complete fluid change and hose inspection.

Critical Maintenance Points

  • The Truth About Valve Adjustment (24k vs 42k): Although the global workshop manual indicates that valve clearance inspection can be extended up to 42,000 km (26,000 miles), in Spain, a preventive inspection is recommended at 24,000 km. High summer temperatures and aggressive riding can cause valves to "float." The exact cold tolerances are: Intake 0.10 - 0.20 mm and Exhaust 0.20 - 0.30 mm. For more information on the lifespan of parts, consult our maintenance guide.
  • Engine Oil and Torque: Use synthetic oil SAE 10W-40 that meets API SG/SM and JASO MA2 standards (vital to prevent the slipper clutch from slipping). The total capacity with filter change is 3.6 Liters, increasing to 4.0 Liters if the engine has been completely disassembled. The oil drain plug should be tightened to 29-30 N·m and the oil filter to 17 - 17.5 N·m. Ensure that the parts of your motorcycle are always in good condition.
  • Chain Tension and Rear Axle: For the suspension to work correctly and to prevent damage to the output shaft, the chain must have a slack of 20 to 30 mm (it should be checked and lubricated every 1,000 km). When retightening the rear wheel, the axle nut requires a torque of 108 N·m.
  • Specific Spark Plugs: This energetic engine uses high-performance spark plugs NGK CR9EIA-9. The electrode gap is calibrated at 0.8 - 0.9 mm, and it is advisable to thread them in by hand initially to avoid damaging the aluminum cylinder head (final torque of 13-15 N·m). If you manage your motorcycle in My Garage, we can notify you when maintenance is due.
  • Tire Pressure: It is fitted with a 120/70-ZR17 at the front and a wide 180/55-ZR17 at the rear. The recommended cold tire pressure is 2.5 BAR (36 psi) for the front tire and 2.9 BAR (42 psi) for the rear tire to ensure agility in corners. For more details, you can consult other official Honda maintenance plans and compare tasks.
