Kawasaki Z900 SE 2024 Maintenance: Official Guide
Oil intervals, valves, Öhlins suspensions, and Brembo brakes. Official maintenance plan for the Kawasaki Z900 SE 2024.
The Kawasaki Z900 SE (2024) is the ultimate version of the legendary Japanese supernaked saga. Equipped with the powerful 948 cc (125 HP) four-cylinder engine, this "Special Edition" stands out by incorporating high-end components: Brembo M4.32 monobloc brake calipers and an Öhlins S46 rear shock absorber. Due to these chassis improvements, its maintenance plan requires specific care for the suspension and meticulous attention to its fluids to perform at its best, both in the city and on mountain routes.
Maintenance Interval Schedule
For the European market, Kawasaki structures the Z900 SE maintenance in main cycles of 12,000 kilometers or annually, whichever comes first. If you own a Honda, you might be interested in our article on Honda CB650R 2023 Maintenance: Official Guide.
| Mileage | Time | Main Tasks to Perform |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 km | 1 Month | Break-in: Engine oil and oil filter change. Inspection for possible leaks in Brembo braided steel brake lines. Chain slack adjustment and bolt check. |
| 12,000 km | 1 Year | Annual Service: Oil and filter change. Spark plug inspection (NGK CR9EIA-9), engine vacuum synchronization (throttle bodies), and emission control system (EVAP) check. Öhlins suspension leak inspection. |
| 24,000 km | 2 Years | Major Service: Spark plug replacement. Valve clearance inspection. Brake fluid and coolant replacement. Recommended Öhlins fork and shock service (oil and seals). |
What Happens After 24,000 km?
After exceeding 24,000 km, the workshop manual states that you should cyclically repeat the maintenance, omitting the initial 1,000 km service:
- 36,000 km (3 Years): Repeat the Annual Service in its entirety (identical to the 12,000 km service).
- 48,000 km (4 Years): It's time for another comprehensive Major Service, repeating the valve inspection, hydraulic fluid changes, and thorough suspension service.
Critical Maintenance Points
- Valve Clearance Debate: Although the Kawasaki manual indicates that valve clearance can be checked at 42,000 km in certain markets, in countries with very hot summers (like Spain), specialists strongly recommend performing this inspection at 24,000 km to prevent premature wear or "pitting" of the valves due to thermal stress. To know which parts to replace, consult our Motorcycle Lifespan and Maintenance Guide.
- Oil and Assist Clutch: Use exclusively motorcycle oil that complies with JASO MA2 regulations with SAE 10W-40 viscosity. Avoid oils with friction modifier additives, as they will cause the slipper clutch to slip. The capacity is generous: between 3.8 and 4.0 Liters if the filter is also changed.
- SE Maintenance (Öhlins and Brembo): Unlike the standard Z900, the Öhlins S46 shock absorber and the adjustable golden inverted fork require an internal oil change every 24,000 km to maintain their exquisite feel. The Brembo calipers strictly require DOT 4 fluid (replaced every 2 years). For general motorcycle care, visit our MotoCorner Community center.
- Transmission Chain: Due to the strong engine torque (98.6 Nm), the chain must be cleaned and lubricated every 1,000 km (or after washing the bike). The correct slack must be strictly maintained between 20 mm and 30 mm.
