Official Maintenance Plan BMW R 1300 GS / Adventure (2024) - Complete Guide
Official maintenance guide for the BMW R 1300 GS (2024). Discover its demanding cardan shaft change at 80,000 km, the inspection of the Flex element and its fluids.
The BMW R 1300 GS (2024) represents the pinnacle of German engineering in the maxitrail segment. Powered by a completely redesigned 1,300 cc boxer engine delivering 145 HP (107 kW), this motorcycle integrates the advanced Condition Based Service (CBS) system. Although it maintains its traditional 10,000 km intervals, BMW has implemented revolutionary maintenance changes to manage its 145 Nm of torque, including meticulous inspections of its handlebar bridge and a non-negotiable lifespan and replacement program for its driveshaft (cardan).
Maintenance Interval Table
BMW structures the R 1300 GS services by alternating standard services every 10,000 km (or annually) with major services every 20,000 km.
| Mileage | Time | Main Tasks to Perform |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 km | 1 Month | Break-in: Engine oil and filter change. Electronic diagnostics and general torque check. |
| 10,000 km | 1 Year | Standard Service (Odd): Engine oil and filter change. Connection to BMW diagnostic system. Inspection of the "flex" element in the handlebar bridge. Check brake wear, spoke tension, and kickstands. |
| 20,000 km | 2 Years | Major Service (Even): Valve clearance check and adjustment. Replacement of spark plugs and air filter cartridge. Rear final drive (cardan) oil change. Visual inspection and lubrication of the cardan shaft. |
| 30,000 km | 3 Years | Standard Service: Repeat tasks from 10,000 km (oil, filters, flex element, diagnostics). |
| 40,000 km | 4 Years | Major Service: Identical to the 20,000 km service (valves, spark plugs, cardan lubrication, rear drive oil). |
| ... 80,000 km | - | Critical Maintenance: In addition to the corresponding Major Service, the complete replacement of the cardan shaft is mandatory. |
Note on fluids: Brake fluid (DOT 4) should be changed after the first year, and subsequently every 2 years. Coolant should be renewed every 2 to 3 years. Consult the maintenance calculator to estimate costs.
Critical Maintenance Points
- Driveshaft Replacement (80,000 km): This is the biggest paradigm shift in the R 1300 GS. Recognizing material fatigue under extremely high torque figures, BMW requires lubrication and inspection of the shaft every 20,000 km and replacement with a new one upon reaching 80,000 km (50,000 miles) to prevent catastrophic failure.
- Handlebar Flex Element: A mandatory inspection task exclusive to this new platform. During every 10,000 km service, the mechanic must check the structural integrity of the flexible element located in the handlebar bridge.
- Exact Oils and Capacities: The new 1300 boxer engine crankcase requires exactly 5.0 Liters of synthetic oil with SAE 5W-40 viscosity and API SL certification (BMW recommends Advantec Ultimate). The rear final drive unit (cardan) uses a specific SAE 70W-80 lubricant. You can find more lubricant tips in our motorcycle forum.
- Spark Plugs: This engine uses high-performance NGK LMAR8AI-10 spark plugs, which must be inspected periodically and strictly replaced every 20,000 km.
- Asymmetric Tire Pressure: To ensure the stability of the front Telelever system and the rear Paralever EVO, cold tire pressure must be maintained at 2.5 BAR for the front tire and 2.9 BAR for the rear tire. This is crucial for safety on motorcycle rides.
