The Triumph Thruxton 1200 R (along with its later evolution, the RS) is the undisputed queen of sporty Modern Classics. Powered by a robust 1,200 cc parallel-twin engine (270º crank), this cafe racer combines nostalgic design with top-tier chassis components. Its advanced British engineering allows for major maintenance intervals of every 16,000 kilometers, but it requires special attention to the millimeter-precise adjustment of its fully adjustable suspensions and biennial fluid replacement to perform at its best on winding roads.

Maintenance Interval Schedule

Triumph structures the Thruxton 1200 platform's service plan in very broad main intervals of 16,000 km (10,000 miles) or one year, whichever comes first. For proper maintenance of your motorcycle, you can check our motorcycle lifespan and maintenance guide.

MileageTimeMain Tasks to Perform
800 km (500 mi)1 MonthBreak-in: Engine oil and oil filter change. Chain tension check and cable adjustment.
16,000 km (10,000 mi)1 YearAnnual Service: Engine oil and filter change. Brake pad wear inspection, fuel injection system (ECM) check, and suspension verification.
32,000 km (20,000 mi)2 YearsMajor Service: Valve clearance check and adjustment. Spark plug replacement. Steering bearing lubrication. Mandatory brake fluid replacement (every 2 years).

What Happens After 32,000 km?

Once the 32,000 km Major Service is completed, Triumph's official plan states that the maintenance cycles repeat from the beginning, omitting the initial break-in service:

  • 48,000 km (30,000 mi): Time to repeat the basic 16,000 km service.
  • 64,000 km (40,000 mi): Another comprehensive Major Service is due (identical to the 32,000 km service), requiring another valve clearance check, spark plug replacement, and thorough steering bearing lubrication. You can compare these intervals with the official maintenance plan for the Yamaha MT-07.

Critical Maintenance Points

  • Engine Oil and Capacity: Triumph requires the use of motorcycle oil (full or semi-synthetic) that meets API SH (or higher) and JASO MA specifications, with a viscosity of 10W-40 or 10W-50. The exact oil pan capacity when changing with the filter is 3.4 Liters (3.8 L if the engine is completely dry).
  • Suspension Setup: Unlike other classic models, the Thruxton stands out for its high-performance suspension. Both the front fork and the rear shock absorbers feature spring preload, rebound damping, and compression damping adjustments. Adjusting these parameters according to rider weight is vital to take advantage of its agility. If you need to find a workshop, visit our motorcycle shop and workshop directory.
  • Spark Plugs: The 1200 engine requires specific NGK LMAR8A-9 spark plugs. Their electrode gap must be rigorously calibrated to 0.9 mm and replaced every 32,000 km.
  • Fluids (Coolant and Brakes): Brake fluid (DOT 4) must be replaced without exception every 2 years. The cooling system uses "Triumph D2053 OAT" antifreeze (pre-mixed 50/50), with a system capacity of 1.558 Liters. To estimate costs, you can use our motorcycle maintenance calculator.
  • Tire Pressure (Specific): To ensure impeccable cornering behavior, the recommended cold pressure (for both the 120/70 ZR17 front tire and the 160/60 ZR17 rear tire) is 2.5 bar (36 psi) on both axles.

Disclaimer: As we are not an official dealership, this guide is purely for informational purposes and is based on the brand's workshop and user manuals (the sources consulted correspond to the Thruxton RS variant, which shares the same mechanical base). In case of doubt, complex issues, or to maintain warranty coverage, always consult an official dealership or an authorized workshop.
